* * * UP THE WALL * * *
by William Soleau March 1990
Version 3.0
*** OBJECTIVE ***
Welcome to UP THE WALL... The game is quite simple and yet very
challenging. Your job is let wall blocks drift up the screen to
provide a route for the drain water to move through. The board is
in a grid like pattern. When the game begins, there will be a starting
point chosen at random (at the top of the screen), where the water will
start to flow after 25 seconds. At the bottom of the screen you
will see a block of wall moving back and forth.
If you press the <Z>key it will move to the left. If you
press the <X>key it will move to the right. When you want to let the
piece float upwards, press the <Spacebar>. The piece will move up the
screen until it hits another part of a wall or the top row of the grid.
The next piece will appear at the bottom as you continue to make a
passageway for the drain water.

*** PLACING PIECES ***
When the water starts to flow, you can keep on placing pieces
as long as the water still keeps flowing. Sometimes you will see
a Bomb appear instead of a piece of wall. This is used to remove
pieces of wall. When you press the Spacebar, the bomb will float up
and destroy the first piece it hits. These are very important, for
they allow you to fix mistakes made while making passageways. Be
careful however that you don't destroy the paths you've already
prepared for the water. Once the water starts to flow, you cannot
blow up a piece of wall with a bomb if the water is already in it.
The other piece you might see is a ?. It is a mystery piece,
and when you press the Spacebar, it will turn into either a bomb or
one of the 7 types of walls.
*** SCORING ***
The longer the water can flow without stopping, the higher
your score. (the score is shown at the bottom right of screen)
If you can make the water cross itself by using the (+) piece, you
will receive extra bonus points.
When the water reaches a point where there is no passageway,
the game will stop and the unused pieces will be deducted from the
total score. To continue to the next level, you must have at least
400 points for each level you reach. Thus at level 3 for example,
you will need a total of at least 1200 points or the game will be
over. The game will also be over if your score is 200 points less
then the previous level's score. For example, if you have 2000
points after level 1, you must have over 1800 points after level 2
or the game will also end.
There are a total of 7 levels for this version and high scores
are kept in a special file which can be called up at anytime. The
best way to learn how to play is to just jump right in and discover
your own strategies for super high scores. The more you play, the
better you'll get. (see final screen for Upgrade to 99 levels!!)
